Depart from Alice Springs

The West MacDonnell Ranges are a long series of mountain ranges consisting of parallel ridges. This impressive mountain range was named after Sir Richard MacDonnell, who was the Governor of South Australia in the 1860s, by explorer John McDougall Stuart during his 1860 expedition across the continent. Within the ranges are magnificent gaps and gorges, dramatic scenery and important refuges for a unique collection of plants and animals.

We take a visit to some spectacular locations along the West MacDonnell Ranges, including Ellery Creek Bighole, Serpentine Gorge, Ochre Pits, Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen Gorge, Redbank Gorge and Gosse Bluff. The ranges are composed of many rock types, but are most famous for the red quartzite peaks and gorges. We explore and appreciate the scenic beauty and history of this amazing area.
